Buffy the Cat

Buffy the Cat is a blog about my cat Buffy. She's a 4 year old british short hair tabby cat who's great at scratching up furniture but a bit rubbish at hunting.

Cats and babies

There are loads of warnings about the dangers of cats and babies (cats sleeping in cots etc) but today there are around 8 babies upstairs with the mothers and toddlers group and Buffy is nowhere to be seen. If she does appear, there will be a flurry of tiny hands trying to grab her, poke her and pull her tail. To Buffy's credit she has always run rather than retaliated, but I'm always happier if she's outside when other people's babies are in the house.

Quiet Cat - I think she has worms

Sometimes the cat goes through a stage of being adorable. No hassle, no scratching. The only issue is that she's trying to get me to feed her 4 sachets of cat food per day and eating most of her dry biscuits. At over 4 years old it's not going to be a growth spurt. Maybe she's got worms. Better go get some tablets.

Cats Protection UK

Just thought I'd give a mention to Cats Protection UK. You can find their site at http://www.cats.org.uk/.
If it hadn't been for the Cats Protection League (as they were called at the time) Buffy would have been a dead kitten sealed in a cardboard box on a rubbish tip with her 5 brothers and sisters. I hope the person that did that is haunted by it.
We got Buffy from Cats Protection when she was 6 weeks old and she's thrived ever since. Has a particular liking for cardboard boxes though. Wierd, all things considered.

Sticky Paws in the UK

Been searching for this american product - Sticky Paws. It appears to be something like a double-sided sticky tape that you put round the corners of your furniture to discourage the cat from scratching. I bet it works too. You know what the cat is like when she gets sellotape on her paws on Christmas day - that'll be her every time she goes to scratch the sofa.
Cheapest Sticky Paws I've found in the UK so far is at

New cat scratching post

I've decided in the battle against the cat shredding the sofa that I must provide a new scratching post for the cat. Maybe 2. Will search and let you know where I get the best scratching post deal.

Cat in the rain

Buffy always gets a bit grumpy when it's raining. She mopes around the house, wanting to be let out then wanting to be let back in again. I suppose if I was covered in fur I'd hate the rain too. In my head I imagine feline goretex jackets, then I imagine what the said feline would do to that jacket if you ever tried to strap it on her. Maybe just have to put up with grumpy cat.

Cat looking for a new bed

We're decorating the bathroom just now and the cat is trying hard to find anything as comfy as the bath mat to sleep on. The bathroom is pretty much out of bounds to her and she seems to be in a bit of a mood about it. I suppose I would be to if I was kicked out of my bed for a week.

Cat staying out all night

Buffy was a filthy stop-out last night. Came creeping home at 10AM this morning demanding the finest of food. We like to keep the cat indoors at night because night time is when the largest number of accidents happen to cats, but sometimes she just doesn't come home. Wish we knew where she went to.

Cats fighting

All the cats in our street have a pecking order which they must observe. As humans we can try and intervene when we see our cat scrapping with another, but ultimately the scenario must be played out until the order is established.
Still, it made me feel bad when I opened the door yesterday to let the cat out and one of her targets was sitting right outside. Our cat went for the other one without delay. I tried to break it up, but realised that as soon as I close the door they'll be back at it again.

Cheap cat food pouches

I feed the cat these cat food pouches that are all the rage just now. They are great but they vary in price tremendously. The thing is, and I guess I'm lucky with this, but Buffy doesn't like the expensive whiskas pouches, and seems much happier when I'm feeding her Tesco or Somerfield cat food pouches which are about 30% cheaper than whiskas. Suits me.

New sofa for cat to scratch

We got our new sofa and chairs yesterday and within 10 seconds of being in the room, the cat went to scratch one of them. We have to put a stop to this. How do you stop a cat scratching a sofa?

Cat making a racket at night

Last night Buffy the cat decided she wouldn't go to sleep quietly and spent a good hour prizing the bath panel off to get behind it, jumping up and down onto the window ledge and most annoyingly, crying at the door every time I was dropping off to sleep. She was not my favourite critter this morning.

Cat food before anything else

Buffy is not a patient cat. When we have a lie in, like this morning she insists on her food before anything else. We naturally tend to sort out the baby before the cat, so we have a tense 15 minutes of buffy weaving in and out under our feet trying to make us either step on her or get so annoyed that we do actually put out the cat food. So we get stubborn and try to wait her out. Doesn't work. Feed the cat. Let blood pressure return to normal. So starts another day.

Cat in the bedroom

We don't normally allow the cat in the bedroom, as she has a habit of attacking your toes in the middle of the night. Last night however the cat hid under the bed before we went to bed and waited for us to go to sleep before making herself comfy on top of the duvet. Clever cat!

Cat weather forecast

Haven't seen the cat in some hours now. Usually this means it is nice weather outside. When the weather is awful she's in and out every five minutes and moans about it like an old woman. As I've not seen the cat in a while it must be nice out. Perhaps I'll stick my head out the door soon.

Cat stuck under floorboards

Found another Buffy the cat when I was browsing online today. This one got stuck under floorboards. They must be related...

Stop the Cat scratching the sofa

Since she was a kitten, Buffy the cat has had a liking for scratching our sofa. We've tried loads of stuff from water pistols to siting a real cat scratching post nearby (which the cat has shredded) to try and stop it, and every day when one of us is in the kitchen you hear the familiar noise from the lounge. It's pretty much ruined one arm of the sofa.
So this week we're getting a new sofa and really want to stop it happening to this one. The arms are much lower, so the cat might not want to scratch but looking for ideas to stop the cat scratching the sofa.

Cat drinking water

Even when she's eating cookies, my cat never drinks water in the house. I have filled her water bowl with fresh water almost every day for 4 years and I've seen her drink out of it about 3 times. Recently I've seen the cat drinking out of puddles more and more. yeuuuch.

Cat on the duvet

Despite the fact the cat has never slept in our room at night since she was 6 weeks old, last night she was again trying to blend into a white duvet (even though she's a tabby). I particularly like the way she shuts her eyes and pretends to be asleep so that you wont move her. Not a chance. Mrs C lifted the duvet and the cat was ushered off to go sleep outside the bedroom. again.
